Daniel: Thanks for the comments. This was a quick grab shot taken as I walked by (I've often seen, & heard, these guys practicing in the park) back in September. I was using APX 400 for the 1st time & was also experimenting w/using the 21mm focal length (I'm usually more of a 50-100mm guy). You're right about the lighting--a reflector or flash would have reduced the contrast. That said, the vagaries of scanning (including the Mac-Windows gamma gap) make this upload look darker than it really is; also, not being experienced w/APX 400, my lab (Nat'l Geographic) apparently under-developed the entire roll.
I like the way the lines in the photo (branchs, bridge) lead my eye to the subject. I like the B&W mood with the sounds of jazz on a fall day. I do wish his face were more lit, a white reflector camera left would have been nice then crop out area on left and concentrate on the musicians.
