Palácio da Vila de Sintra - Part Two According to some historians, it was in this palace that the King João I met his emissaries after their arrival from Ceuta and made the decision to conquer that town in North Africa, fact that is considered to be the starting point of the portuguese expansionism. It is also believed that, in 1501 King Manuel received in this palace the news of the arrival of the portuguese expedition to Brasil, led by Pedro Alvares Cabral. Between 1674 and 1683 the King Afonso VI was imprisoned in a room of the palace, only coming out to the chapel, where a special balcony was built so that he wouldn't be seen by the people.
In September 19th of 1885 a banquet was held in a room of the palace, hosted by the Royal Family, in homage of the portuguese explorers Capelo and Ivens that completed a famous journey through the african continent, from Angola in the west coast to the east coast. (Part One - Last Picture)
