About We had wrapped our shoot, and I was walking her down to her car, when I saw the great lighting in the lobby, while waiting for the elevator. I snapped one last shot, and it was perhaps one of the best of the session.

Just goes to show - never consider the shoot is over, until they're out of sight.

She is an exceptional model. The amazing catch-lights in her eyes come from the window behind me and the stone floor, which was awash with afternoon sunlight.

Yes, Avi, just make sure that the lens maintains an f/2.8 aperture through the whole zoom range. The most affordable lenses will stop down on you as you zoom out. You have to pay a little extra for a constant f/stop, but it is worth it.

Exactly ! That is why I am thinking of buying a 28-70 f2.8. I have seen other portrait photographers use the lens, and I have been pretty amazed with the results.

Thanks for all the help Paul. Wish you a good night !

The 50mm f/1.8 is certainly suitable for portrait work, but I prefer having the flexibility of a zoom when shooting models. With my 50mm prime, I find myself moving forwards & backwards to properly frame my subjects.

one more question Paul: In your opinion, is a 50/1.8 better lens for portrait, or this one that you are using (28-70 f/2.8) ? And why ?

Avi,
As for the camera shake, you need to be shooting at 1/125 minimum shutter speed.

As for the over-exposed areas, set your Exposure Value (EV) setting to -1/3, which will ensure the brightest whites are not over-exposed.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Paul, I have a quetion: I am using a 50 mm f/1.8, but am not able to achieve satifactory results for portraits. I am either getting some shake, or some over-exposed areas. Do you have any suggestions ?

regards,
Avi

A very beautiful portrait.

This is all natural light, Julie.
Directly behind me was a window (reflected in her eyes) but just as important was the light bouncing from the afternoon sun up off the floor to create that even softer lighting effect.

If you ever have any lighting questions, please don't hesitate to ask: paul@laraimages.com

Paul this is fantastic. Is this all natural light or did you use a speedlight as well? I am going to take studio classes soon. Oh it is so difficult! I admire your work very much.
Best,
Julie.
