Hi Joe, the 70-300 IS had problems with focus in the portrait mode, and I am wondering if thats what we may be seeing here. You'll have to google this to find out more, but it has been well documented and canon even acknowledged certain serial numbers of this lens could be sent back to Canon for free servicing. This picture is out of focus to a high degree. Have a look at other pictures with this lens in portrait mode and see if the problem reoccurs. Also check the serial number of your lens against the ones that canon had listed. This might be a bit harder to find, because it was about a year ago they made the announcment.

The horizon looks fine, Joe, although it's a little hard to tell with trees and the buildings obscuring the natural horizon. I like the way you've got some of those fine old buildings in the frame, too.
