This is an excellent composition Jessie. The tones are beautiful the details stunning the depth superb. I love your own presentation of it and Doyle's crop is also very good and probably about where I might have cropped. However Dave writes a lot of sense.....It is YOUR scene and how you have presented is how YOU saw it. Well done to you sweetie, wonderful work. All the best......Ray

I have read the comments after reading your question. I agree with Doyle's crop. It shows the beauty of the Sun through the trees and those gorgeous reflections. Although part of the sky is cropped out, we still see the eswence of it and the vaster expanse is not needed is this. I find that crop also draws me into the scene more than the others. Somehow, it draws all the elements of the picture together. So, I would go with Doyle's crop. YOu captured a gorgeous scene and your colours are wonderful.

Hi Jessie, here's my answer, I like it as it is, need only a little bit sraightening IMO. But I played with it and did some cutting too and framing, naming and....... but didn't change colours or other things. I hope you like it. I like your picture a lot, beautiful colours and silhouettes.
Take care,

Klaas

Excellent photo. Yes...I would center the photo, but go a bit wider in that case and of course stay vertical. We have a nice reason to break the rule here - the ice and the sky are both equally interesting.

beautiful composition jessie... love the soft colors in the sky and the reflections on the water... so tranquil a feeling this image provides.
I think I would try to compose this image about like you ... center, left where the sun is ...
well done m my friend,
Michele~

BTW i liked the horizontal one.. more over.. also I would ask you not to focus or rather take the exposure from the sun directly.. rather first you use 3D matrix metering.. take one picture 1 stop under and another one 1/2 stop under.... this will give you near perfect exposure.

nil - are you in fremont, MI?? or elsewhere?? haha. i see pix of CA from you, maybe that is what you meant. ;) not so cold - 20-30s. when we lived in minnesota, it got to -50 sometimes. now THAT was cold, and is a benchmark for me! i do have a horizontal - here's one below. i don't like the houses in it, though. the shot above is of one of the few areas on the lake without a house - it is the public boat landing. thanks!!

doyle - i can always count on you and dave! thank you! i love the crop. i can see that it is exactly what i wanted. i am a water girl, i could sort of care less abt sky most of the time. :) can you tell? haha...anyway - excellent questions you posed, and i appreciate your help and ideas!

thanks, dave! personally, i don't like the sky as much as the reflections. i tried to take this with the rule of thirds, but it didn't ring true for me. however, when i took a shot with mostly ice, going just up to the treetops, that didn't look IT, either. hence my question!! thank you.

Oh Jessie - This is AWESOME!

Beautiful colors . . . Lovely scene . . . Love EVERYTHING about it. As to your question . . . I wanna go with Dave Stacey's answer but that isn't what you asked. Clearly it's your decision but since you asked I would mention that - keeping the rule of thirds in mind . . . where is the power in the shot? Do you, for example, have a dramatic sky? Awesome reflections? Where is the best of the photo . . . and how is it best accented?

In this case . . . I love the flaming sunset colors and those warm hues feel awesome next to the cooler blues in the water. Wonderful reflections . . . perfect saturation - and the part I could live without would be the very top of this shot . . . not that it's bad . . . but it's not as great and unique as the rest. So I have attached an example of where I would crop.

Nice work!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

I like the way you've done this one, Jessie, as there's some interesting colour and detail in the sky, as well as on the ice. The rule of thirds is always a good place to start and then vary it from there to suit your tastes and the contents of the image. Only you know what the actual scene looked like, so you're the best judge!
Dave.
