It's the scanner. That's my punishment for getting a cheap one. I will try re-shooting in black and white and see what happens. It sounds like it could be interesting, and possibly better.

Interesting subject, however I think it would be better sharp. This could be a scanner issue. There is a "Scanning for Optimum Performance" article on the site.
Have you tried this in b&w with the POF on the negative space?
