Hey, it's the red chair!!! Almost as good as a red canoe! This is SFU, right? I like how rejected the chair looks, all by its lonesome on the roof. Just think maybe it needs a little more contrast to pump it up.

Hi Kim - thanks for the comment!

This one is an oldie. I haven't been to PH since October of '05 . . . but I hope to get there this fall.

I'm with Collin... I like the composition. And the soft pastels are really soothing, which go along with the watery tones.
Is this one from a while ago, or did you slip away to Pender Harbour again recently?

Hi Collin. Thanks for the comment.

As for the beach, I was standing on it when I took this photo. Of course, I've taken that information for granted, and it didn't occur to me that others can't see the beach and will therefore wonder where the heck it is. D'oh.

Technically, they're not bionic implants from another planet as Pluto is no longer an official planet.

Hi Becky, the composition is fine and I agree the soft light is appealing. I'm just wondering where the beach is given the title, HAHA. Bionic implants from another planet???
Regards,
Collin.

I don't think I'd seen this one before... I like the stump... it reminds me of an animal coming out of the water. (maybe a sea lion?) I agree about cropping the tiny bit of sky in the top right... keep it more uniformly green.

Oh no, not me again!
This time I'm bothered by the top little corner of white sky (you needn't take much notice as I'm just typing out loud here!)
Otherwise think this is a really pretty/cool/tranquil place to be. The 'spots' of yellow gold give good spark. Love it.

Really? Are you going to be in Vancouver soon? Please let me know if you are . . . it would be great to share a Vancouvery shoot!

I wouldn't have immediately guessed the photo was taken here . . . unless you had mentioned it was taken this past winter, which has been especially brutal in these here parts. It was even snowing this morning in places. We're supposed to see blooms by now!

You know, I've lived here for 8 years and I have yet to go to Van Dusen Gardens. *runs and hides*

Vancouver and around are god-sent for landscape photographers, you are so lucky to be part of it all.
I'll bet you would not have guessed the attached image to be Van Dusen Gardens a month or so ago?!
Would love to join you on a shoot sometime early summer?

Audrey! (Except I mean it more like "Aaaauuuuudreeeey!") So nice to hear from you! How have you been?

"Supposed to be" . . . heh. You crack me up. :) I really appreciate your critique (especially since I've been a UF deadbeat for the last, oh, couple of years). This photo could have benefited from a ND grad, only I didn't have one at the time. (I do now. Wheeeee!) I metered off the sky, but perhaps I should have metered off some of the lighter planks? Anyway, I was wondering how dark I could leave the bottom. I'll have to play with it some more.

Anytime you want me to list off primo photo opportunities in BC (or AB!), just let me know. I kind of like playing photographic tour guide. Vancouver is particularly great for shooting, and there are always more intriguing niches around the corner to discover.

Thanks again, Audrey.

Hello Becky,
Compositionally this is text book perfect, hard for anyone to find fault. This is a scene one has come to expect of beautiful BC (and Alberta - I was once ticked off for not mentioning Alberta!).
Since this is 'suppose to be' a critique site.....while the mid/upper half of the picture is perfectly exposed, I find the near half slightly too dark.
One of these days, I'll need to find out from you where all these pretty places are in and around Vancouver :)

Cool shot Becky, Besides the nifty shadows from the stamens, great minimum DOF with good detail and wonderful orange tones. Nice work

Great use of the road to lead you to the storm while enjoying the scenic view. I would have gotten a little lower to the road to give you the feel of walking in the picture. Keep up the good work.

I know what you mean when it is worth it to drive for hours to get the right shot. This is one of them, with a great sky and well saturated colors. I find the picture with the foreground is nicer for the simple reason it gives you more sence of distance. Keep up the good work.

I'm with John - "attitude" is a good way of putting it. Big sky is great and this one has an interesting ground/Ged to go with it - I like the darker tones there. The scale is great - those little white things are seed silos, right?

I really do like them both, Becky, but if pressed I'd have to say the main post above has more impact! The second version is really pretty, and the russet color of the foreground weeds is lovely, but overall it has a more static feel, maybe because of the very balance that the foreground brings to it. I like the crispness of the first image, all blues and greens except where the sun has broken through on the field... Plus I love the 'weight' you've given the sky!

I like the original post. The second is just another pretty picture of a pretty place. The first one though, that has attitude that says look at me! The sense of space is much nicer than seeing red weeds in the forground. They also diminish the scale of the distant objects and reduce the pic to foreground and oh yeah some sky.
Go with your instincts. - John B

By the way, here's the same shot, but with some foreground. I really like the extra splash of colour, but I don't feel the photo has the same impact as the one above. Which do you prefer and why?
