Wow - that made quite a difference! Did you use the standard tools in Photoshop? I was not totally happy with the detail I thought I was getting, but you've pushed the capability here quite a bit! I'm going to have to get out and try to find some wildlife to photo, and then have a go as you have suggested! Thanks Margaret! Rat

Thanks for the support, Ann. I just feel I'm having difficulty grasping things that are in abstract. I guess I feel more comfortable with or can relate more to impressionist or realist stuff! I'm going to have a go at some macro too when I can get a decent lens, so maybe that will help... Thanks

Thanks Joggie,
Unforunately I'm not blessed with great light all the time in the UK, and I always seem to be fighting shutter speed and apeture.... Need to get some more sun! Rat

Darlene, I was directed to look more closely at your wildlife images and I'm very glad I did. This just blew me away. I'm not sure of what I can add on top of the comments that are here, but it puts me in mind of an image of trees that won the Image and Form section of the UK Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. I think this is just as good. It creates an impressionist image for me that really puts you there imagining how you would feel at the moment the shutter release goes. Fantastic. Just Fantastic. And I'm very glad you were recognised for this. Rat

Thanks Jan! The light level was pretty low, so I could not get the depth of field to get the whole thing in focus...... Next time.........! Rat

Hi Jan. Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure I have the answers as I'm learning too, but this will tell you what we did.... This capture is a collaboration between me and a friend playing at what could be done with a Night Vision Monocular I bought for wildlife watching. I found you could get an adaptor for a Digital Camera, and so decided to give it a try..... The Camera provides exposure information, but there is no aperture control and the focus is manual. So it took a bit of experimentation to get a 'correctly' exposed image. It's a factor of how much IR illumination you have (the monocular has a built in source)and how far you are from the target as the reflected light intensity varies significantly. We found it was necessary to have a high ISO setting (3200 if I recall) and a low shutter speed. This guarantees grain I guess, but I think the bulk of the effect is from the monocular that seems to be grainy by the way it fuctions. This capture is actually hand held, so maybe it could get a bit better with a tripod as the shutter is going at about 1/45 to 1/60 in the case of this capture. Focussing was very difficult as the depth of field of this arrangement is very thin....! (perhaps another reason for a tripod?) I'm only just learning about post processing - I get a lot of comments about cropping! - I'm starting to have a go - so thanks for that. If I get the time, I'll try and do it and re-post....

Mervo - This one is indeed a fine looking Fox!I'll try and post some more! I have to admit that these are in captivity. They are in a large enclosure, and are pretty shy until feeding time! I'm trying to learn to be able to cature photos like this in the wild.... Rat

Margaret,
Yeah, thanks for that! So far I have concentrated on the technical aspects of the photos, and relying on instinct (or luck!)to get the framing right and so on.... So this is very useful, thank you!

Ali - Thanks! I've watched this family with five chicks grow this year - spent a lot of time with them. They don't look this cute anymore - but they have survived and are starting to venture away from their parents now - so they're doing well! Cheers
