About I got to the pueblo 10 minutes before it was closing for the day which didn't leave much time to shoot. The light was very dramatic though.

Thanks for your comments James. You have a discerning eye and I think I get what you're saying. I do like dark/almost black shadows but I guess you have to make up for that with more interesting highlights. Aside from the composition, framing and lack of mystery, are you suggesting that I should have used a different type of film or just given it more exposure? What ever advice you have is appreciated. Too bad I can't easily get back there to give it another try though.

Hi Anne, I know where you were going with this and I have been in the same situation myself. But the scene didn't work. The problem here is the film speed used here was wrong. There wasn't enough light at this film speed to render the shadows as anything but empty black. And that is ok. Brett Weston, Morely Baer, and many others used this technique. But here the scene was not luminous. If you look at their work in Taos using the black for shadows you will see that the highlights are very luminous. Their high values were very high and had a lot of separation in them. Here the separation is flat. Also the post on the left is intrusive. It does nothing here but make you wonder what it is. It takes your eye away from the really interesting building and door. And the graveyard in the background has nothing in it but the tops of a few crosses. There isn't an air of mystery to it. If you would like any help with B&W let me know I'd be glad to help. James
