hey Arwa..
ur portfolio is 1 of the amazing portfolios i have found here at UF till now. but i liked mostly this photo and ur self portrait HAVE I.
now this photo is very thoughtfull, she is readying deeply she is at a corner of the photo, alot of words on the wall that atract u and might challenge u to read them all, the fading to black at corners takes u away...
this is a poem in a photo.

Aewa,
my suggestion was justa a respose to discussion about cropping that went on. i like the original shot (it is in my favorites bin), but somebody was not happy with the chairs on the foregraound and i treid to see how ti would look without them. you offered a close up shot of the same subject that i found weaker because it lacked a significant part of the text. so i though about something in between - no chairs but more text.

Thank you so much for critiquing this image constructively!
I appreciate your systematic look at this picture and considering all the elements when trying to edit it! but why do you want to crop it? the way she looks so tiny against the huge wall and text is what made me post this one in comparison to many other shots taken of this girl at the same place.
Im not criticizing your need to edit it!
I thank you for your input I just want to know what you hand in mind when cropping it
Thanx for your comment naftali :)

Arwa,

this is an excellent capture. it works on many levels. the more i look at at it the more i like it. good, appropriately coffeish tone too. lack of motion at such a slow shutter speed is a testimony to your subject's concentration.

croping is tough - you don't want to loose the words, they have meaning. i'd hate to loose the SEDUCTIVE INTENSE or SENSUAL CAPUCCINO - in contrast with a serene and modestly atired reader they add humour to the image.
how about this crop as a compromise?

Sorry I missed the rest of your question kareem
I didn?t use photoshop here
I used photoimpact XL for the light
then took the edited image to photoshop to finish the editing :)

Your comment made me smile because shes not an Arabic girl shes a Muslim half Italian half American a very dear close to my heart friend of mine
Is it a fact that arabs are the worse readers? I don?t know about that im a bookworm lol I?ll read anything anytime anywhere ;)

Kareem Hamdan Kareem Hamdan   {K:3180} 4/21/2005
rarely seen, the arabs are worst readers in the world, they have money but it is only for food, no need for industry or publishing. how did you add the light effect? on photoshop?

Great capture Arwa - technically the toning and slight 'irising' is superb. Thematically it's very rich. I think of a contrast between words that matter (invisible in the book) and words as designer confetti, sound-bites on a wall with hip chairs to go with them. Depth and surface. /Hansi

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17558} 4/7/2005
Arwa, I like this picture. It shows a young woman engrossed in private reading, surrounded by text that is both public and almost overwhelming. The juxtaposition is what makes the image work for me.

Another observation, which I'm not sure I can describe well: When I glanced at the image from across the room, I could see the form and light of the image but not the details. My first thought was that you shot a detailed image of an old typewriter. The girl serves as the carriage while the table and chairs serve as the roller. The paper scrolls above it all.

I'm not sure that the symbolism will translate well, but it made me like the image even more.

Very powerful image, the tone and the back light effect, gave this composition a immense interesting view, if I have to say something I?ll agree John in cropping the bottom till the wooden fence, to give a strong and to concentrate on the main subject. Though it?s IMHO. Saeed

tim park   {K:165} 4/6/2005
wonderful picture, i think the perspective is really great how the figure seems really tiny compared to the huge chairs in front and the large print in the back. almost equally impressive was the way that you really care a lot about others' comments and take the time to really consider each and respond to each. i applaud your gracious attitude.

It's very nice to have you back! Honestly I was worried. Since the news does not show people ready at Starbuck's we end up having a different opinion on how life is in that part of the world. Thank you for showing us the good sides too.
I'm very happy to see you work again. Is it okay to add you to my friends list?
As for this picture I think it's very cool! A variety of cultures are shown! Great job!

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Very strong photo showing such a rich potential of different interpretations.
Here, the letters are trying to catch the attention of this young lady. Just to tell her to watch the world around...and her, she is reading as there are only empty chairs around...
Very good idea to have kept the chairs on the right side as they are really part of the "no dialog".

Like very much your "flowers portraits".

Hi john! Actually I did try the crop u mentioned, to remove the two chairs on the right?but then the girl (who is a dear friend of mine) seemed out of place she was the only element of the image in the middle distance, between the chairs in the foreground and the wall as a background so I kept them to add balance, and I used Photo Impact XL to create the shadowy area to lead the eye straight to the main subject
thank you so much for your honest critique and I would surely try your idea on another image!!!i took a lot that day

P.S.
I really like your new series quite creative ;)

Hi Arwa, good to see you back here! I like this picture: I see a lot of tensions and contrasts in this photo underlined by a rather gloomy tint. This alltogether make this an interesting and thought provoking picture, well rounded by its artistic quality characterized by its frugal esthetics. Well done, I like it!
A title comes to my mind: "A Zest for life"
