This week I am studying portrait photography to broaden my horizons on taking photographs of people & the use of artificial lighting. This is a shot from Day One. The excercise was to go out around London & photograph other members of the group in some 'quality' lighting & backgrounds in two hours. This is one of the shots that I like for the composition & lighting (both on the other student & along the hallway). I would appreciate any comments, thoughts opinions & even abuse if it would help me at all.
This I am also proud to say is my first black & white print I have made in the darkroom.
Very attentive to the detail. I think your right on the stairs. I actually have a slightly different final print now that the stairs are much darker in & it does look better.
I was using an Eos 30 - the 10d thing comes up automatically & didnt get changed.
The soft face is just a bit of a scanning issue I think as the photo is sharp at an a4 size.
OK, I missed day 1 for some reason, so ignore my comment on day 2's pic. A BIG question here is how did you make a b&w print in the darkroom yet took the photo with a 10D? Don't get that!
Tones in this shot are pretty good. I like the texture on the wall near the guys head. The lights are smart along the wall too. The guys face appears soft though. Was it a slow shutter? Overall with the composition my viewing jumps from the guy to the stairs so I think he needed some more emphasis to keep the eye. Matt
