Generally to get to the black stage it has to have all the snow off of the top. and then the sun starts to work on it. once the snow is gone and a skim of water covers it, I think you actually see the water color coming through the clear ice. A better term i should have used was "honeycombed" by this stage of melt it has last a lot of strength and is just short of being "rotten ice" then its gone.

isn't it amazing how those colors are in such a contrast with reality? For me, at least, colors bring movement of some kind, and here you can see those ships totally stranded and quite helpless... me like it :)))
