Hi Shawn, but didn't you know that Ragdolls are natural models? :-)) Just kidding ... they are just as impossible as any other cat/kitten :-))
Shawn, do you use a teaser wand when you photograph? In case you don't know what a teaser wand is ... it is a short plastic rod that has lots of stringy bits at the end. Judges use this to attract the attention of the cat/kitten. I would never be able to get my good shots without teaser wands and I have a whole selection of them. This is also the reason why I could never use the Nikon D70 (which I still have on my wish list!) as it would not leave me one hand free for the wand.
When I do my "official litter photo album" I do set up a little "studio" and have only one kitten in the room, as the rest of the litter go nuts trying to get to the wand by climbing up my legs/back. Each kitten gives me maybe 2 or 3 minutes of concentration - anything longer than that they lose interest.
My recent high-white series was imprompto - I saw the opportunity and grabbed it. There was no time for reflection boards or lighting or anything fancy. And to be quite truthful -- almost all my "very good shots" happened on the spur of the moment!
Try and persevere ... at least you have Andy as an assistant - I have nobody! :-))

With the strong backlight, you have to open up the apeture a bit more to get more exposure on the subject. Or even use a reflector to throw some more light back into her face.

That is a cute pose. You might have used a little fill light either by reflector or flash fill. A white card or mount board would do the trick. It would also put some bigger catch lights in the eyes. Very sharp. Don.
