Agreed all all points Antonella, excepted one: Attractive people never get old. Your self portrait
confirms it ! Many thanks for the kind comments, glad to see you like my style :-))

Hi Bertram,

thank you so much for your kind comment which gives me the opportunity to explain my point of view. Although I cannot see well because of my LCD monitor, I believe that you are right when you talk about the artifacts. This might very well be, since the photo was taken in a public session with very poor light, so it was dark in the original file and whenever you retouch a photo and also denoise it, it is sure that you ruin its quality.
Unfortunately, for Nikon I have no software to convert RAW files, so I have to work with JPGs.

As far as sharpness I completely agree with you.
I am an old photographer and I like old-fashioned portraits, especially the ones made with a fixed focal, Nikon 85 mm. f 1.8 in digital or the Leica 135 mm.in analog in available daylight.
Also the 85 mm. F 1.4 Zeiss T* which I use with Contax is fabulous, but more and more, we photographers who post on sites are appealed by the possibility to develop at home in Photoshop and avoid the labs. So, like many of us, my beautiful lenses sit in the shelves and it?s a crime.

In order to understand what I mean please take a look at the photo in my portfolio called " Kiss me if you dare? and also my two self portraits. No retouching and no sharpening required.

I find that oversharpening a portrait is a shame so I use a very light hand and when I can, nothing at all.

During public sessions, unfortunately most of the times it?s imperative to use a zoom because the girls are moving and you have no time to frame ( I detest cropping ). Only a couple of times, like the mentioned ? kiss me if you dare? I was able to use this lens and the results are far better.

The actual trend is to use the new f 2.8 stabilized telezooms ( 70/200 or 300 mm in digital ), which are faboulous, of course, and make a nice bokeh ( background blurring ) without any effort, but I find that somehow they flatten a portrait.

My choice, whenever possible are good, old-fashioned prime lenses which oblige you to move on foot and reason over the f values in order to enhance the details of the subject that you want to be eye-catching.

I would very much appreciate your very valuable opinion.

Thank you again,
Antonella

Another nice one, a pity that some artefacts at the shoulder and the arm disturb the harmony. Maybe from resizing ?
BTW I personally would not like that suggestion below, it looks terribly oversharpened and thus unnatural like a Barbarella comic, the wrong way for such a portrait.
Sometimes I wonder how digital could change some folks perception so completely ? The old truth are'nt true anymore ?
Your choice of sharpness was absolutely right.

The pose, the lighting, the subject, the uncluttered background . . . all combine to make a great portrait. You have a definite knack for this. There is a little speck of white on the shadow side of her nose which I'm sure she would object to.

Maybe you are back on usefilm now?

Have a Merry Christmas!
