About your question, I take it that when you say "SLR" you mean a FILM camera. There are SLRs, and DSLRs for digital SLRs. I would say go out and buy a digital camera. These cameras have a lot of features that only the most expensive film cameras have and are thus more versatile. The pictures are sharp and can make very nice enlargements, just like film or even better, depending on the megapixel. The lenses also have a 1.5X magnification compared to a film camera, so that a 300mm lens is equivalent to 450mm with a digital camera.
