About Second color image in a row ;-)

Slowly, I get used to the possibilities of my new D70. This time, I tried to hunt for night shots with a f/1.8 lens from Sigma. Had no tripod with me (actual data: 1/10 shutter, 1.8 aperture), so I think the sharpness is okay for free-hand shooting.

The colors are just like they were in that night, no rework here. creates a weird mood, I know. But that's the reason for this image ;-) I thought about off-centering the tower a bit, but then rejected the idea. reason: for me, the two different house silhoettes on the left & the right offcenter the tower anyway.

Comments are appreciated a lot!

Hey bro,

I know that crowded pictures split the masses in half. some like the crowdedness as a whole, others would like to have a better focus on some aspects.

In this scene, I just kept my own ego on mind. in other words: I just wanted to nail down the atmosphere and the people around it. actually, I was running behind my group of friends (the red shirt is chrissie, btw) and had no time to make a steady shot. next time I will definitely spend more time here with a tripod, no question.

take care, thilo

Dear Baki,

the amelie comparison is legitimate - there are a lot of scenes in this film (which I love personally, too) that reminds me of this night shot. great that you like this.

take care, Thilo

Dear Gayle,

the bright lights come from the lanterns you see. there was virtually no direct lighting from the sun anymore. and yes: this looks weird ;-)

hey uwe,

Lg, Thilo

Dear Hugo,

thanks for the lenghty comment here. looking forward to reading every comment from you. no flattering ;-)

I really loved the activity here so I tried to capture everything. some guys here expressed their concern that there's too much going on here. actually, that WAS the situation and the motivation for me :-)

as for the noise: you're definitely right about that. Actually, I don't remember the ISO value (it's not in the exif data, strange enough), but my guess is 600, no reduction. will definitely do some testing with that, also with the underexposure you advised. thanks for the useful tipps! I did a mild selective blur filter on the image but obviously not enough =)

thanks, my friend. take care, thilo

Dear Carmem,

thanks for the kind words. In fact, most of my picture are digital ;-) but not with a digital SLR but a compact one. so I switch to the D70.

Hi bro!
OK, part of my resolution problem with that images was due to my new lap top. After changing some settings it's way better, but still there is something left (and this is the image). However...There is nothing wrong with that image. Nice, warm colors, good composed and framed but there is something missing, or the other way round, to much going on. I love images where you do not see a main subject and you as the viewer pick it and build your story.
The cars, they distract me. I think they doesn't really go with the picture. A few steps forward and get the people bigger and in focus with a blury background. The 1.8 should do it. I know...no tripod...I'm just hallucinating.
But the warm colors the drama sky and the glowing light are beautiful.

hi there, been gone and need to catch up with all of my friend's great images such as this one!..my first thought was "WOW,a high impact graphic painting!"...love the colors as is and the highlights on the cars..only part i do not understand is where does bright light come from on front of tower? Looks like the last of sunlight, but that is behind the tower,right?..if this is weird in any way, then i must be weird, because it really appeals to me..regards,gayle

mmmmh, .........

irgendwie......

Hi Thilo, considering this a free-hand shot, I think you did a really good job. As to the colours, they do look weird, but very vivid, and the tone of the sky is beautiful. Don't think there's a need for off centering the tower, as the different diagonal lines and the perspective make up for it, and the activity in the street preserve the dynamism. I think you did a very good job with this one.

There's a bit of noise. Wonder what ASA setting you used for this one, and if you had noise reduction on. Have you considered under exposing by -0,3 - 0,6 EV? Maybe that would've rendered the lights a little more withing balance. Only a minor thing, as they sure are part of the atmosphere the way you've captured them....

Nice! ....;o) (Sure hope this last remark is useful!)

Cheers,

Hugo

Thilo! I'd say that you and your D70 compliment each other quite well! This is fantastic! The colors are so rich, they almost look like they are painted on! Just beautiful, my friend.

Good one Thilo. Steady for no tripod/long exposure. Amazing sky colors. I'm not that crazy about the cars in the foreground, actually just the first car. I think they distract from the power of the image. Other than that, I think this is pretty cool. The D-70 is be tons of fun!

Dear Angelo,

thanks for the constructive comment.

as for the tripod: the hunting came just suddenly ;-) And there a lot of live open-air concerts where a tripod is a bit unhandy.

as for the composing: personally, I like the reflections in the cars. may be a very personal thing though ;-)

Next time, I will definitely try to get a better shot into the street. good advice here.

thanks mate!

The right time for a night shot, with some colour still in the sky.

Good mix of natural and artificial light here.

For a handheld shot, it's pretty good. But why not take a tripod? Sometimes it's good to slow down a bit.

Another thing would be to move a bit to the left, eliminating those cars from the foreground and that artificial lamp in front of the tower. You;d be stepping into the road, I guess? And have those people on the road as the foreground.
