The car was doing 180mph when I panned it. It was doing about the same amount of speed the next evening when it "wadded up" on the wall in turn 1. A fuel cell ruptured and the entire car was consumed in flames as the car continued to skid. "Buckshot" Jones, the young driver, escaped unscathed. As track chaplin I sat with him in the infield care center minutes after he "wadded up". He was "as cool as a cucumber" as the saying goes. He was put on oxygen and calmly "dipped" snuff while he waited to be released. He was and is a nice and very polite son of the south.
