Indeed the exposure setting was a compromise here. (It was set to +1, knowing that some portions will be overexposed). I guess taking such a photo later in the afternoon would have been better.

Inside/Outside contrasts - always a problem with over/underexposure. You've done quite well here with the balance! I've been to Kyoto about 8 times, but I've yet to do much photography there! In July this might change though :)
