Rape field... Sound scary... Like a field where they rape women... No, just joking (although it did hit me that this word in English is the same).
A really wonderful photo, very nicely composed! The sky looks so dramatic, and the fields are like beautiful artwork made by nature!

You used the brief time at your disposal very well, Chris. This is a most dramatic shot. That sky is wonderful. I can imagine it being used a lot elsewhere whenever you need a touch of extra drama. And the very strong colours of the fields and that red, Devonian earth shine through despite the overall gloom. And as Keith says, masterful composition...

Thanks everyone for your kind comments about this shot. I took it during a two hour break between a wedding reception and the evening function. As Carole sat and chatted with some of her friends, I sneaked off with the camera to bag whatever I could. (So I had no step-ladder I'm afraid, Keith!!)
The landscape in Devon, (where I lived for some 18 years), is very different to where I live now. Here it's very flat, where I lived in Devon there were rolling hills, as you see in the picture. The red soil made a wonderful contrast to the yellow rape plant flowers ~ I can't tell you what the crop in the foreground is though.
Kind regards, Chris

Hi Chris,
you guys down south are a week or so in front of us in the froxen north. I've got a couple of locations staked out waiting for the crop to come into full bloom ;-)
However, back to your image. I love the way the fields and layers overlap and interleave, thats masterful composition. It might have been better to get a little more elevation, remember that step ladder next time ;-). The additional height would enhance the interleaving effect and bring the trees lower which would lessen the disruption to the lines.
All in all outstanding work.

What a great mood to this picture. The sky looks so threatening. Was wondering what the blue in the center of the picture is. Don.

The sky is dramatic, but if the colors look like this on an overcast day, I can only dream what they look like on a sunny day! Nice lines & composition.

Yes, George, these are entirely natural colours. What you are seeing are a number of fields that have been planted with 'oil seed rape' ~ a crop that produces a vivid yellow flower prior to harvesting. This is quite a common scene in my part of England at this time of year. Kind regards, Chris

Wow Chris, what have you found here. Is it the natural colors I'm seeing? It is quite a beautiful shot, whatever it is...
