Roger, nice pic. I think it is a little underexposed, the body melts with the dark wings. Nice composition. Congrats

Your first butterfly? If so, a great way to begin. I'm pretty sure it's not going to be your last! It's just gorgeous...

Actually... I think they do stay still, (well, for a short while... haha) but only if YOU stay still! And I have read somewhere in some photo book that if you scared a butterfly away from a flower, just sit absolutely still and it will come back to same flower when it think it's safe. But I haven't tried, so I'm not promising! ;-)
I think it's a superb shot you took! Absolutely perfect! Very beautiful butterfly to start with, perfect light, sharpness, dof and colours, and a really good composition!

Never seen one like this. It's beautiful....must be the male. The scale of the flora is interesting. Great shot!! Fast lens?

Hi Roger, What a great shot. Made it on of my favorites. I've tried to catch butterflies and it just hasn't happened. To answer your question of "secret beach" it is south of San Francisco about 25 miles. Dave

Roger, another splendid shot! Have seen a lot of different butterflies in my time, but never one like this...excellent execution! Old belief that witches taking this shape/form stole milk and butter...- Gayle
