Sandy, the best, fastest and safest way to do this is by using layers. Duplicate the background. Desaturate the background. Select the new layer. Then simply grab the eraser tool and start erasing the parts that you want in black and white. The eraser will have to be at 100% for a full BW effect. You can use the lasso or the magic eraser (if u have PS 7) to delete some easier areas... Also you can play with the opacity of the eraser to create some cool effects...

not sure how you are suppose to do it.. but what i did was traced him with the magnetic lasso tool...and then pushed select inverse..i than swithced the levels here and there and then i pushed select inverse again and desaturated the color and did a bit of this and that on brightness and contrast...

Pretty good Sandy. I see u are getting the hang of B/W-Color alteration. You did leave a white section on this right glass lens which should be transparent, and therefore you could see the continuing window frame behind him... Like this...

The photo isn't naturally exciting, but by combining color and b&w you've come up with a nice photo.
