I imagine there are thousands of people all over the world that have been in and out of photography over the years, and then get into digital. It definitely helps having a previous knowledge of the way cameras, film, and darkrooms work. Decent post processing software, a good monitor and excellent lenses do wonders to get the creative juices flowing again.
Visiting sites like this definitely inspire due to the varied interests on display.

I've had a break from photography for a few years (SLR wise) have just bought a Canon 60D DSLR and as i'm on holiday this week will give it a good workout! Saving for a 120-300 F2.8 zoom now!!

The Hawk and prey were actually in a fairly heavily wooded area, fortunately for me, the sun seemed to have a direct path on them. If not, I wouldn't have been able to get this kind of shot hand held. It's hard enough just finding this sort of situation. But, when the light is also right it's priceless.

He saw me coming from a distance. That's when he flew to the the dead Gull that was already stashed in the tree branches. soon after this shot, he took off with the Gull in his talons. He must have thought I was going to steal it from him. He didn't realize I'm not that good at climbing trees. :)
