I rarely do a square from my pictures, in such case it has to be really necessary; I have just a few "squares", so I do agree. Here I think it concentrated attention more on the beautiful subject itself :)

Congrats for Fifa :>
As for the shot, I like especially the multicolor lights; very effective!
Maybe I'd "move" the frame more to left, as the right side looks a bit dark and empty
