Hi André,
It was the same for us. There was a major crash of the vole population in 2004 and these guys were forced south in the winter of 04/05. Some did return the next winter and this was one of them. Since then, no sightings in this area.

Hi Todd, I passed by that sleeping racoon in the morning and again in late afternoon. He was in exactly the same position. My wife thought he might be hurt or dead. I told her that is what they do :) He is gone now, probably raiding someones garbage cans. We had some Great Grays come down near here a couple of years ago, but they are quite rare in this area. I think they came because of a shortage of voles wher they usually hunt. Andre

Andre,
LOL! That looks rather precarious. I wouldn't want to sleep there.
You are correct about the location and (understandably) incorrect about the species. It is a Great Gray.

Hi Todd, I thought the same as Dave at first, but upon closer inspection, the owl is the entire middle part of the tree. Both sides are owl. It looks like a Barred Owl with the tail feathers running down the right hand side and the breast on the left side. It looks like he might be looking straight at you through those branches near the top.
Here is a much more difficult one for you to figure out. :) Find the Racoon in this one. :)

I'll go for an owl on the left side of the trunk, very well camouflaged, Todd! Dave.
