About An intense lightning storm rolled across the region on the night of May 30 2006. This was my first attempt to chase and photograph lightning and I managed to get lots of action! The closest lightning bolt was within a couple kilometers and there I was standing dangerously in a large open field with a metal camera tripod next to me. Fortunately, the bulk of the storm passed not on top of me but further to the south allowing me to stay out with the camera. After the shoot, I digitally combined four 13 sec exposures to produce this composition. Processing for minor color balance, sharpening and some cropping. In my excitement, I had a polarizing filter left on the lens from a previous photo outing. (This explains the longer esposures, bumped up ISO to 400 and wide-open lens settings that I used). Hope you enjoyed.

Thanks Dave! I can't wait for next summer to try more of this.

Thank you Sam. Much of the involvement with lightning photography is luck.

Hi Dave,

Thanks! You may be correct... the polarizer might have helped in this case for the lightning pictures. I'll have to experiment more on this again next year.

Thanks Jim! I was lucky to have relatively calm winds despite the proximity of the storm.
I tried a couple more times to capture lightning during the summer and missed out. It's more difficult than I imagined.

Thanks for your comment Banie! I was quite lucky to have relatively calm winds despite the proximity of the storm. I'm sure that made a different in helping keep the trees still.

Nicely captured! And not easy. I spent a lot of time shooting lightning this summer and only got a few worthy of putting in my portfolio.

The longer the exposrue, the better, so maybe it was good you had your polarizer on... I may have to try that next summer.

Now this is an impressive shot. The trees seem quite stable considering this is 4 shots combined and you were shooting in a storm. Nice work.
