About Only a few young camelthorns (4 or 5 at the most) succeeded to survive the extreme climatic conditions of Deadvlei. Most probably due to local microhabitat conditions providing just enough moisture at during the most critical times. The grass in the background is just a flush of growth occurring only after very good rains (1 in 50 year even). The "skeletons' of the other trees that fall along the wayside strengthened the sense of endurance one experience when looking at this scene.

Background info: Deadvlei, once part of Sossusvlei, according to scientific theory was cut off by moving (windblown) sanddunes from the rest of Sossusvlei about 900 years ago. The big camelthorn trees was approximately 600 - 700 years of age at that stage. Cut off from the regular water supply of the main wetland the trees all died. Due to the lack of moisture and the extreme temparatures the hardwood cores of the big trees were preserved and many of them are still standing - skeletons of their former glory though. I spent a whole day from before sunrise until late afternoon in this magical place - it was like stepping back into time. While taking photos of the many shapes and textures, I was trying to see this place as it was 900 years ago. Every here and there, along the edges and bottomslopes of the dunes, the water of the extraordinary rainy season of 2006 brought some bright green growth - small pieces of evidence of the former glory of this place! I stood in awe and did not want to go. One sure thing - I'm going back!

Beautiful and very interesting capture toghether with complete informations. It is very impressive how the rows of grass grow all in the same direction making geometrical patterns. An enchanted place.
Thanks Joggie. Take care.

The image has your trademark excellent quality but it may be the weakest of the series because it lacks the bold layering of contrasting forms. It certainly illustrates you point about life among the desolation, Joggie!

Very nice Joggie. This must have been quite a trip. The color of the sand looks like some here in the southwestern US. Nicely composed. Don.

Perfectly captured here with well composed shot.
I guess the combination of DOF,perspective and colors give this the look of an embroidered textile art. Thanks for the informative about.
