About This lovely snake came to visit me when I was planting my flower garden. They're large but harmless, this one was close to 4 feet long. Non-poisonous, it's a very beneficial to have around, and getting rare in this area. I had to tug its tail a bit to get it to go into defensive mode. I'm wishing that strand of grass weren't in the foreground, but wasn't about to stick my hand in there to pull it away. That would have scared my snake away.

Wow Chels! This one is very very cool. As Sai said earlier, the grass really makes this one work. The depth is right on the money...blah blah blah...this is just really really good dear! Nice work!

Thankyou everyone for your comments. Fortunately in this end of Ontario there are no poisonous snakes. I like snakes. They eat mice. Snakes do not come into my home, they don't try to steal my foot, they don't leave their stinking little droppings all over the place, they don't endanger my life by spreading disease and chewing on electric wires, they don't destroy my belongings by chewing them all to shreds...they go about their lives hunting mice. And occasionally, they do a good pose for my camera! ;-)

Don't bother about the grass, it made a very natural framing for the snake.Great photo.

Hi Chelsea
Personally, I belong to the "good snake is a dead snake" variety (expecting some fallout!) so well done on what IMO is a brave shot excellently executed - no reference to the snake. Like everyone else, I like the blade of grass...

Good capture Chelsea!! I happen to like the grass in the foreground. It makes a framing accent that's natural (clearly) and the side grass makes a really nice natural framing too which the lower blade is accented by. The DOF is really very good, the colors are rich and well saturated and the pose . . . the pose . . . ok, well, just because they're not toxic doesn't menat they won't bite! Nicely done!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Ummm... wow! I'm amazed at the photograph and your skills in getting the snake to "pose" for you! LOL I would have probably had a small panic attack without even thinking to grab the camera and here you have made an amazing photo out of it.

I also like how the grass acts as a natural frame. The focus/DOF is great too. Awesome job!

actually to me ..the framing by the blades of grass..is perfect! wouldn't be half as powerful an image without the grass..

Cool shot, Chelsea!
I don't know many women (or people, really) who would have:
a) recognized the species
b) realized it's non-venomous
c) known how to get it to pose

Here in Texas, people seem to think we only have two kinds of snakes: Near water? Moccasin. Not near water? Rattlesnake.

On behalf of all the amateur herpetologists out here, thanks for the nice moment. ;)
