This was one of those lucky shots, and a good example of a photographers tunnel vision. I was actually going for the two cars in the far background which had collided, the next thing I know my dad is yelling and a blur flies past my viewfinder. I snapped and this is what I got. Turns out a much more spectacular accident was occuring right in front of me, while I was zoomed in on the other. Good to focus on your intended subject, but keep an eye out for what is happening around you in case a better shop goes a begging.
The car is a Porsche Carrera and it had collided with a Ferrari just behind the cloud of gravel and dust. I actually think the cut-off-going-out-of-frame composition works here. This is how it is on the film, I did not get the front of the car. I cropped the top and bottom, then converted to B&W. Also sharpened slightly to get the gravel just right. The Carrera itself was white with just some orange writing on it's side, couple that with it being midday what colour there was was not very stunning, so B&W seemed a good choice. Also B&W strengthens the gravel and dust clouds IMO, also lets you focus on the action without colour distracting you.
Race day photography is quite challenging IMO, certainly there are many I missed, and with just my 28-90mm many I went for but did not have the focal length to get very well. But it is exciting and worth honing your skills on.
I like the car going out of the frame, too (with the dust trail going across) the crop, and the b&w. You've taken a "just missed-it" kinda shot and turned it into something quite nice.
