Hi James,
As I recall, It was taken on a very sunny day. There was quite a bit of glare on some parts of the skull. It was not intentionally over exposed. But I may have done some little manipulations in Photoshop that added to that look.

This look is peculiar (in a good way). I do wish the skull were not over-exposed (or is it?). The unusual look draws me in and asks that I look longer.

I was experimenting a little with some blurred layers on this one and a few others. I think it worked out pretty well on this one.

I thought the subject matter really suited the process very well in this case. What I forgot to mention is the fact that this skull is only about 100mm from the nose to the back of the skull. It is most likely from a Racoon.
The one I did after this one is much larger (700mm approx)

Hi Tony,
I read about this technique a few weeks ago in an older book on photo-impressionism. The article talked about snapping two images of the same scene on a tripod. One in focus and one out of focus. Then, sandwhich them together. (slides or develope) Anyway, it seems similar results can be had fairly easy in Photoshop, or another program.
In the past, with film, I have made several kinds of multiple images, but never thought to do any with the same negative out of focus.

Yes, I was very pleased with the results on this one. I think the trick was not to lay it on too thick. Over-doing the glow/blur can sometimes put people off because of the obvious manipulation. I think when it is a bit more subtle, like in this image, viewers can sense there is something not quite normal, but can't put a finger on it.
The dark-side stuff can be fun, I like flipping back and forth for some variety in the portfolio.
I'll be going back to investigate with Scully myself on the weekend.....We don't need that Muldar guy ;)

Hi Andre,thanks for taking the time to explain the making of this image;an interesting technique which I've read about before but must now try out for myself!I do quite a lot in Ps. as you'll have seen in my portfolio and still life work is something I very much enjoy.The lighting effect in Tangled up in Blue is most effective.

An excellent air of mystery to this Andre and the postwork technique lends itself extremely well to this compositon. The exposure is spot-on with busloads of detail in the lights and darks. I love the texture in the foreground wood and the lighting has a suitable ghostly atmosphere to it. Well done to you my friend....AWESOME work. Very best wishes as always....Ray

That method works better than ever on a subject like this. The skull is positively incandescent. Half expecting to see glowing green eyes appearing slowly from within the sockets.... Have you got hold of Scully and Muldar yet?? They still may be lurking around Jim's way... ;)
Just love this Andre and I'm flicking it over to my favourites. Can't wait to show my son, he loves creepy like me!

Thanks for the comments. This one was done with that blurred layer merge process that I've been fooling around with lately. Very light on the blur and very light on the opacity, when merged together. Like you say, a nice little glow from the light that compliments the darkness.

I think that eerie presence is probably due to that process that I've been using. (merging a blurred layer with the original image) It adds a very nice glow when you turn the opacity down to a low percentage on the merged, blurred layer.

Thanks for the comment and for visiting my portfolio. As I said to Gareth earlier, it's always nice to see some different people commenting on your work.
You mentioned the illumination.... I've been trying a process in (Photoshop) lately that really enhances the illumination and softens at the same time.
I got the image the way I liked it in the B&W conversion first. Then I made a duplicate copy of the image. I blurred the duplicate copy with a light gaussian blur. Then I merge the two images together and adjust the opacity bar so that the original image shows through nicely. Finally I deselect and save the image.
I find this process gives me a nice surrealistic, halo like glow on the finished image. It takes a little practice and you can over do it. But when it comes out right, it's worth it.
Check my image "Tangled Up In Blue" or "Marsh Afternoon" for a stronger but similar effect.

Quite the dark and moody shot here! Looks like you nailed the exposure on the skull in both the shadows and light. Great tones too. Hmmmm
If the suit doesn't fit, I would suggest discarding it. Might be a good time to cash in the shiny stuff, but who knows?
