About
Taken at the 2006 International Hoop Dancing Championships at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
This was taken for a photography class that forbids us from digitally manipulating the image other than cropping - hence the water bottle in the background.
I tried a shallower depth of field, but you're right - the speed of the dancers made it very difficult. It was also a punishingly bright day, so opening the aperture to decrease the depth of field made it nearly impossible to avoid overexposing the shot dreadfully.
Bill this is really nice shot. I might experiment with a shallower depth of field if you're concerned about background distractions. Considering the rate of movement of the dancer that probably would be quite challenging. I like the tight crop quite a bit even if all the hoops aren't visible and this is a hoop dance. The focus on the expression of the dance is quite appealing. I would recommend that you request exemption from your instructor on curve and level adjustments. Getting accurate whites and blacks is only going to bring a digital image on par with film. Thanks for your comment on my recent submission and welcome to UF.
