sorry for all the comments but i had to say something about this one! this is definately one of my favorites.. it's so mysterious and intriguing while still maintaining a touch of playfulness. there's so much energy in this and the girl's eyes truly capture the viewer. the DOF is perfect and the lighting is impeccable. it almost looks like you had a flash head to act as a hair light. again, beautiful work.
on a separate note, were you aware that bronica has discontinued their med format lines? i guess now is the time for me to get one as it seems they will soon become collectors items!

Mandy, thanks for your recent comments. As for software, I really don't use it except for just scanning prints. All the work is done by hand in the darkroom. I just enjoy it more and am better at it than I ever will be on a computer. ;)

Nice angle of view. I now remember the first image I commented on of yours - was the other with this child. Great work. Interesting project. There are many wonderful and beautiful things right around our home.

Lovely Young Lady. Camera does like her. Bringing yourself down to her level might present you with a better image. Thanks for sharing her with us.

Very nice work. Nice web site. Love the light and angle on this image. The shadow darkens the mood and makes the photo for me.

Thanks!
Matt, of course. =) This image is very representative of my current style and philosophy. I used to shoot more fashion-type images, like Bambina. My current major project includes this image, along with Alone Again, Summer Rain, and some I haven't posted here yet.
Anything else I post (self-portraits, still life, etc) is peripheral stuff I shoot to stay 'balanced.' When your primary subjects are kids, it's easy to go overboard and get sugary-sweet with them. Shooting other things helps me stay fresh and focused for this project.

Thank you all for your comments. Very flattering, and I'm looking forward to posting more. There's some wonderful work on this site. Eamonn, I browsed through your images, and they are especially wonderful -- a lot of emotion framed by good technique that doesn't call attention to itself. I'm glad to have found this site.

Cheryl, this is a great portait. Mary Ellen Mark and Sally Mann came right to mind, more so Mark; it's on surface levels a very direct, basic portrait, but the subtleties in your choices of composition and an obvious ability to connect with your subjects sets it apart. Excellent work.

I suggest everyone check out Cheryl's website, it's fantastic, like her photos. I especially like the portraiture. The use of black and white seems well thought out, not just a "let's see how this color photo looks if I convert it to b/w" kind of thing. I think you have a special way with kids, Cheryl. I'm looking forward to seeing future posts.

I'm really enjoying your project. I looked at your website and can see that you're very talented.
I like the light fall-off on the back. It really tightens the focus of attention.

Interesting....brings to mind Lewis Carroll,Mowgli,L'enfant Sauvage..would like to see more of your project.Ilike the eye-contact and pose very much but the lighting on the leaves to her left looks a little unnatrual.
