Very nicely composed, Chris! The foggy background of the old pilings gives it an eerie atmosphere. Dave.

Hi Chris, I've been asking myself why I didn't like this shot at first. Afterall, it has quite a lot of intriguing and appealing elements in it. The mood, created by both the fog and the structure in the water, the gull in the foreground to breat the "silence" a bit, and the tones, which are also pretty good.
Yet there's something that disturb me about this photo. I think the composition is brought slightly off balance by the pole and it's reflection on the left, partially boxing in the scene, framing it on one side, if you know what I mean. Also, I find the bit of surface the gull is standing on a little bit too small. I think you could've made more use of it by taking a lower view point. This would not only create a basis on the lower side of the photo, but also place the gull a bit more prominently in the photo, whithout loosing the touch of the structure in the background (which I think is a great setting!) And the last thing I would like to mention is that, eventhough it looks like a very grim and grey day, playing a bit with the levels in Photoshop or any other program would make the gull come out a little stronger, creating an additional kick to this photo. The longer I look at it, the more pleasing it becomes. I attached a photoshopped version to illustrate what I mean (as close to it as I can get, that is...)
Cheers,
Hugo
