I absolutely love it !
It could cause height fear in a large screen. The choice of black and white is so interesting. Playfull contrast between round (the fisheye effect) and geometrik squares of the buildings. It addresses so many issues in our sub conscience. Height. Size from distance.Horizon. Shape of a flower and much more!

Hello Hugo, and multiple congratulations on the well deserved triple awards: EC, SC and BIP! And what a great picture this is! Not only the perspective is tremendous, but also the clarity is fantastic all the way to the horizon line and the sky! The B & W buildings form geometric patterns of light and dark, with all the dynamic range present. I find the clarity even across the Hudson river amazing, and the orientation of the skyscrapers through the fisheye lens extremely pleasing. This is a fantastic poster for NY, and a true classic! Again, agreed. but notwhithstanding this photo has that 4th dimension or not, how tangible does that 4th dimension need to be? I think a different approach than one would expect, a different point of view than is common can also take any subject out of the ordinary, and for me, that would also qualify as a 4th dimension.
In other words, I think that 4th dimension is not necessarily something that makes a photo irreproducable.
I'm not arguing whether this photo qualifies, as that's very subjective, and I do respect your opinion on it.

Hi Martin, I quite agree, this shot can be repeated quite easily, On a sunny day, the shadow of the empire state will be almost exactly like that, but that's besides the point, I guess. What I'm curious about is - in general - why the fact that a photo can be repeated with ease change anything about the rating or viewers' appreciation of such a shot? Interesting point.

There was an album with a similar graphic vibe but memory fades here as well?
But this definitely belongs in an album cover ? not the puny space accorded to cd?s? but the great canvases of the old vinyl albums. A smart artistic director would use it as the cover choice for a re-issue of a grand classic tune? Mozart?s Requiem?
This is a big, impressive picture Hugo, well worthy of all accolades.

Hi Todd, thanks for your comment, and I appreciate your suggestion. I've posted the original shot, with the cropped sky in my reply to Manu. Interesting suggestion, which I guess would also work well. I chose to post process it as is mainly because of the square format. It's one out of a series of 45 square B&W shots, mostly shot with a 6x6 medium format camera. The consistency throughout the series made me square this one too.
What I like most about the suggestion is that (once again) I realise how subjective composition is, within the series, I don't think there's an alternative but to crop it square, but as a stand alone, I think you have a very good point.

Hi Hugo, yes, I?m a bit quiet lately, too many things to do in my family and the rest of the time spent taking shots ;) This photo gives me the sensation to be an eagle flying over the city, not only for the height, but also for the great angle of your lens, it would not have been the same with a 50 mm ;) I like the richness of details that make me think to the many people working, talking, walking, laughing and crying down there? This shot as of a ceremonial dance, where the pattern created by the tall buildings draw you into the picture and sweeps you around the frame. I think you did very well and obviously spotted the potential for creating a striking with the group of skyscrapers, then capturing the proceeding from the perfect angle view not too low so that you can?t see the circular shape, but IMO a bit high that you begin to loose the energy of the real altitude feelings of the buildings. Saying that the way shot fills the frame and how low building patch of earth is slightly off-center, approcited method and superbly executed.
You have 3 titles here, its time to hire one of them at least: )

Superb Hugo! That fisheye really has come into its own in this shot... There is such a feeling of being on top of the world. Or perhaps this is a manmade porcupine with quills poking out in all directions? Currently in defensive more following 9/11?
Its a wonderful image and easy to see why it has attracted all the awards it so richly deserves.

Hi Pat, that Hattrick was quite a surprise....:) I do agree, the title is rather off, three corners seems a bit far fetched with this shot. Then again, the selection of images swiched in due course. Thought of renaming this one to "pin cushion", but Vertigo would also be appropriate. Need to think of an appropriate name for the entire series, though. I'm working on it...:(

Hey, Hugo . . . You got WAY up there! Consider the vertigo as being induced in many of us. You chose a pretty good time of day so that the suns angle made the buildings stand out in relief. The shadow of the building (the one you occupied?) in the foreground is especially interesting. I will put this lens on my "wish list" (it's a long list).

Hi Bradley, I shot this through the eyes of a foreigner, like the rest of the NYC series. Really loved being there.... Somehow, the B&W fitted / fits with the way I experienced my time in New York.
I enjoyed reading your description a lot. In respect to this shot, I never looked at it that way, as I got rather frustrated with my fellow tourists pointing their nifty little cameras through the grating flashing happily at the city (to no avail) at the exact same point where I had planned to take a shot. So when the spot was vacant, I took my shot, and rushed down.... Don't think I'll ever get up there again, but I'll surely return to NYC.

It takes large vision to capure the expanse of NYC in such an encompassing way! When I sit back, admiring the way you see the city, I cannot help but feel like I have a better understanding of what this medium is all about. Your presentation is as comfortable as popcorn in a big bowl. It's all there, it's wonderful to look at, and there is an overwhelming sense that NOTHING is being missed. That's huge.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Hugo. But I think both versions carry their own merits. The original has an eliptical appearance whilst the BW version has more depth and feeling of claustraphobia....once again photography like most art forms can be interpreted in so many ways.

Ah.... I took this shot from the top of the Empire state building, holding the camera through the fence. You'll see a part of the ESB in the lower left (and right) corner. Camera was pointing almost vertically down...:)

Hi Manu, Thanks, my friend! Cropping the sky? hmmm. Interesting thought. I'd need to try that... Per attached, the original shot, straight out the camera, with a cropped sky. I maintained the full width of the shot, primarily because I think with a cropped sky, the width emphasises the vastness of Manhattan even more. Is this what you had in mind?

Hi Carolyn, I didn't do much to this shot. The distorted skyline is the effect of the super wide angle 10.5 mm lens, straight out of the camera. All I did was crop it square, desaturate and work on the levels a bit.
