Whatever works, ya know? A box is a good idea, especially if you lose the camera. I have an expensive one, so I opted to craft a cheap model on the outside of the car (which I did lose).
If I ever mount it outside, I will cut out some styrofoam templates and box the camera inside so if it falls off nothing will break. I will also drive slow.
For inspiration, check out this guy:

dud that is pretty genius, i stuck a box in the door and the camera in it with a cable release out the window, kinda difficult, especially cause i have a stickshift.

Kostas: Read update just above to see why I don't use expensive equipment on the outside of the car...

The first batch of photos are in, and I have to say I was lucky to get them. On my last shot I was driving with the boom on top of the car looking backwards while in traffic.
It was below freezing, and what I have learned is that duct tape gets less sticky in cold weather... needless to say I lost the camera and arm in a gust of wind at 45 mph. The arm was driven over several times, but the car behind be caught the camera in the windshield and it defected into the gutter where it was not run over.
This is what the resulting image looks like:

omg...never thought that my pictures would inspire such a creative response...lol your idea is special Michael, and i wish you good luck with it,but i still think you should put your fears aside and mount your camera set on bulb on the outside of the car! ;-) kostas

Hi Michael, very ingenious contraption! Just curious: How are you planning to attach this camera to your car?
If I understand correctly, you'll need to stop the car to prevent overexposing the image as well. Have you concidering a spring release of a second "shutter" in order to stop the exposure if you cannot stop at the time you want due to other traffic? And how will you advance the film?
Very interesting concept, and a very nifty, low budget prototype. I'm really curious to see its results!
Cheers,
Hugo

Mike, you are a certified nut.
Just kidding! <;^)
Very ingenious, especially with the Warhol-ian wing.

In case you are wondering what this is all about - look at the night ride photographs by Kostas Tzanetos.
I'm going to attach this camera to my car and drive around.

Here is the flap up - wind blows the flap open for exposure.
