About This image really does't do well at this size, but I wanted to show it anyway. This is the "barren wasteland" of the arctic coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the place the Bush administration would like to sacrifice for a few months supply of domestic oil.

its tragic. thanks steve for the reminder. Everyone should get out their pens (keyboards) and let the administration know what they think.

Well, they can hardly claim they're putting "no one" in danger exploring for oil, since there is clearly an extensive population here. I find the number of caribou in the photo mind-boggling. It's well done and informative.

Actually, Russell, I'll disagree with you for once ("hopefully not reading this")- :) I think the photo should be sent to them and everyone else who has a vote on this.

I am sorry for being so political here however this too is a deep passion of mine. I hope that it will not vanish. Former president Reagan tried to do the same thing, Ansel Adams gave him a tongue lashing he would never forget. Anyway I'm off my soap box now. Sorry for the speech
Later my friends,

The "Porcupine" Caribou herd (named for the Porcupine River, where they go in the Autumn, in Canada) has about 180,000 animals. The group in the photo was between 40-50,000 caribou which covered an area of about 10 square miles. Yes, that is the ocean in the top of the photo. This herd calves along the coastal plain, a narrow strip of land between the Brooks Range and the coast. The same area provides nesting habitat for many of the ducks, geese, swans, and shorbirds of the western and central flyways. Needless to say, I'm not in favor of oil exploration in the Arctic NWR, and will do everything I can to try to help prevent it from being destroyed.

Steve,

Yes, everyone should have a look before the caribou are gone. Before the land is torn up by the massive trucks. Before the very slow growing vegetation is extict. Thank you Steve for a final look before it is gone forever in the name of "Homeland(Yeah right)Security" I hope Poindexter or Ashcroft isnt reading this yet I might be labeled as a terrorist!
Later my friend,

Russ
