About this man was facinating - he stood so straight and tall and had this hat - no one else had a hat like this - he wore it as if it were part if him ... you could feel him looking at this scene - he had such presence - confident, silent, strong .. he was one with this moment and this place where he stood ..

Hi Thomas, thanks so much for your comments .. as for Plus-X it is a smoother film in terms of tone capable of very delicate distinctions of tones .. contrast is medium, but that good for days when the range of light is very broad and great for printing (no matter the method, silver or digital) .. it's a lovely film, hard to pin down .. well worth a try!

my best

Great! - yeah, you can feel his presence; the composition is as clear and smooth as the tones - very good printing!
regards
Tom

PS: how´s the plus x compared to tri-x ?
(finer grain of course but what about contrast and tones?)

John- Thank you for your comments on my portfolio, they were much appreciated. I have great respect for your work. I viewd your web page and am turly captured by it. Street Photography has always appealed to me. This image inparticular is one of my favorites of yours. my frist reaction was "WOW how awesome". Your images give me the same thrill as those of Gary Winogrand (of of my favorite photographers). Once again thank you for your comments.

Very sharp eye. Everything is extremely well done here - the entire composition, the tonal solution, the enhanced central lighting. Even the vertical logs are perfectly matching the man's figure. Excellent photo, John. Will be my favorite.

Brian T. Ach   {K:1742} 10/22/2003
Really though, this is one of your most emotional shots for me, and that is saying a lot. Yes, it brings to mind Feininger ("clarity, simplicity, structure"). This is such an amazing print to me, at a small size, to be so sharp- (I need to see this at 16x20) but to feel I am inside the shot at this small size is truly an accomplishment.

This may sound odd, but for the first time, with this print, I am realizing what sharpness in a photo means to me. I am not saying that all shots should be sharp (hardly, as you know) but this picture and the exposure and film and sharpness bring to me an emotion that is not easily forgettable. I have come back to look at this picture many times since you posted. Congratulations.

Even without seeing his face, I feel that he is seeing beyond place...if you are firmly enough in place - can you transcend it?

I like that his hat is above the skyline...

Great picture, Feininger-style! A pity that the lines on the edges of the picture converge slightly (due to the wide-angle lens) -- a little retouching in PS might have improved that detail. But it's only a detail. The picture as a whole defies such details ;-)

Lisa Paully   {K:1735} 10/16/2003
Amazing John - this is so timeless, when moments like this come along it makes you feel so special that you are there to witness them (and capture it), and you captured it perfectly.

Fabulous, John! Personally, I think it's Jimmy Stewart ;)
The Plus X is great -- nice tones, and it's going to be fun to see what you'll do with it in the future.

Now -- for the stuff I always love in your work: look how every element here is lined up so perfectly to lead the eye around the frame. Just wonderful.

Well... Maybe not... Because, unlike him I suppose, hats just don't suit me !!

Goes straight to my favourites... I like the comment by Fabio, there's something about Kafka and "America" in this picture, but it also reminds me of F Scott Fitzgerald and his excellent descriptions of the high life in the 30's. So great, John, so great...

These are one of those photographs that defy time. If it weren't for the historical perspective provided by the modern buildings, this could be construed as a photo from theo 1940's or '50's.
