Thanks very much for the comment . . . and your eye does not betray you. I avoided artificially sharpening this image and the compression, conversion from RAW to Jpeg and upload did, indeed, result in a softer image. Since the original is better . . . I'm VERY pleased with your comment!! Good eye!

Since I was a kid, I like to draw and paint birds of prey and this expression and pose is one of the best I ever saw. According to my taste it could use a nudge of sharpness, but that's a personal matter.

Yes Annemette - we're quite lucky since they migrate between the mainland and Catalina Island and can be seen even from shore. Farther south, in Baja . . . where laws are not as stringent, they actually pet the whales!

Oh you have whales passing out there on their way to Alaska from South America? Go out in a boat!!
We just had a killerwhale dying on a shore. Such a pity when this happens. Maybe all our electronic equipment disturbes their communication and sense of orientation.

Marlyce could return from the driveway with good photos. Of course she did. I was planning on 'borrowing' her 500mm lens to get some whale pictures but it apparently went with her to Laughlin, Nevada where she gave it some exercise!! :) I DID get to see some whales . . . but they were SO far from shore (and me without my boat)! :) Maybe Marlyce and I'll have to pay to go out on one!

Insecure geniuses such as I feel very insecure without constant feedback from kind people like yourself! This guy was QUITE alone . . . I used 220mm to capture him from a significant distance. Also . . . I added a SLIGHT gaussian blur with a 100 point feather to the BG to lose the texture of the canvas and still keep the color . . . it was blurred by the DOF anyway . . . but not enough for my taste. Thank you Grasshopper . . . you sure know how to keep me motivated!

I'm NOT a 100% purist but I like this as is and don't want the added issues that invariably arise with post work. ANY hint of work literally ruins the shot (IMO) and I'm only marginally good at it. I'll do it if I feel like it's warranted but didn't feel like it here. I still work it from time to time but if it's not going to make a BIG difference to me I won't even try. Thanks very much and, frankly, you're right . . . some people might have been able to make the eyes a significant center of interest!

The expression on this Hawk says he is not liking whoever is closest to him , is that you Doyle ? Do you think he was un-comfortable with you and the camera ? He is beautiful and you got an incredible , excellent shot here... the BG does resemble the sky and is very complimentary. I honestly don't know how You could have got a better shot Doyle. ((I know that's not much of a compliment..ha!)

Very nice portrait Doyle. No evidence of the fill flash, which is a good thing. I don't know how you feel about PP work but I would have considered bringing the eyes up a just a tad. Personally I love it and you have done well given the difficult background you faced.
