About Was sitting on my couch watching TV late at night when my cat brought this in to play with. Rescued it and ID is as a Herald Snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia). The daily: Eastern Province Herald, was the first to publish anything on the existence of this snake species, hence the common name - Herald Snake. Occurs in wetland areas where it hunts frogs. Although it has very sharp knife-like poison teeth in the back of the mouth, the poison is not known to effect man at all. It can cause heavy bleeding though. This is a small specimen (12-15cm), very recently hatched. They can grow to a length of about 70cm.

Hello Joggie,

A great shot, as usual. Specially like this minimalistic approach with the white background.
Your use of DOF is also excellent and sharpness is exactly where it belongs. Compliments with this fabulous shot !

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs :)

Joggie,

I'm glad to see you saved this from your cat ;o) Our cats are equally giving of presents however they usually bring grass snakes. I really like the flow and composition you chose. I especially like your minimalism for background. It makes the entire shot more dramatic and focused. Well done as usual. Keep up the great work!!! I love your style.

I am happy that you paused for a photographic opportunity, Joggie! The texture, irridescence focus and timing to get the tongue and a classic S curve help me gratly appreciate this creature - even though I do not like snakes!

Excellent capture Joggie, it looks like he's looking at you. Sharp focus on the head, I too would have prefered a more natural background. Well done.

All the best,
Joe

What a beautiful shot, Joggie! The irridescence on its head is really great, and you certainly grabbed a decisive moment with his tongue darting out.

Hi Joggie , a brilliant shot indeed. Living on a smallholding i get a lot of these snakes. I have the odd resident frogs in my workshop, and obviously they are atrscting these snakes.
Once again an excelent shot.........Russell:)

Geeze, Joggie. The other night I was watching a show on the poisonous snakes of Africa... and they were talking about how deadly the Puff Adder was. I thought about you out there roaming around in the boonies... and then you post this snake. LOL

Nicely captured on the white backgroun, love the shadow!!

Excellent capture, Joggie, and a very interesting composition, with the head in focus, and the body winding in and out of focus. Before I read the "about" I wondered how you got him against that background. You've got a pretty brave cat there, too!
Dave.

Hi Joggie,
Nearly the same thing happened to me, my greyhound came inside swinging one of these around his head. It must have taken 3 hours on the web to find out what kind of snake it was, unfortunately we killed it before we found out it was harmless. I feel really sorry about that now though:(
A great shot of this very pretty snake showing the beautiful jewel like colours on the head.
7+++++++
Sylvia
PS Funny thing is we don't live anywhere near wetlands (Uitenhage)

A nice DOF brings the head out of the shot very well..great detail Joggie.

I would jump out of my skin if my cat brought me something like this...interesting to know that his venom doesnt affect man though. An excellent capture
Cheers
