I love your composition. However, I do not think that I would hang it on my wall because the tag pierced in his/her ears does not bode well for a happy future... In fact the eye is sad making it a moving portrait:) Andree

I'm never sure what is the most attractive to the farmer, the colour of the eartag or the number on it! Great perspective and colour Hugo a pity about the softness as already mentioned by the others - nothing one cannot fix with a program like focus magic. Other than that a great shot. Regards.

Hi Robert, thanks for your comment.... you're too kind; the DoF is terrible in this photo; if shallow, it should've been on the ear tag, and if wide, I should've gotten the photo in focus in the first place; I only noticed it too late, but the image is too soft...

yes, evening light. The focus point is definitely missing - it's just out of focus, and that was totally unintentional. I only found out when it was too late. Luckily, that doesn't happen to often...:)

thanks for your feedback. The dominance of the tag was rather intentional, using the cow as backdrop. At least that's what I tried to achieve. Still not quite sure if it was a good decision, and reading the critiques, I'm beginning to think it isn't - really. The softness was utterly unintentional, though, and I screwed up there, I agree. Only noticed it until it was too late...

Hi Doyle,
Thanks for sharing your technicalities...:) Eventhough the cowish element is the key in this series, the primary subject is the tag (intentionally so), creating a rather moooooooh-ish backdrop of the herbivore.
The softness is utterly unintentional, and basically a major oversight. I only noticed it when it was too late. I felt like such a stupid cow - no pun intended. (looking sheepish)
This image forms basically the wedge between nrs 1 and 3, and I think the three together create a more balanced overview than assessing this photo as stand alone - at least that's what I tried to achieve.
Yeah... Been away way too long. Life's been rather busy, and I'll probably have to take another leave of presence soon, but I'll return again, sooner or later...:)

The whole head, heh? Do you mean the alternative version I posted in one of my first replies to this photo? I think a more "conventional" portrait would suffer from the distractions in the background more, although this one has its flaws too...:/ Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for your feedback. The softness is rather surprising, didn't notice that on my screen when I processed this photo - strange, that doesn't happen to me very often, but I can only agree...:)
More people have commented on the dominance of the ear tag. That was entirely intentional, though. Within the series, I thought a very close up photo of a brown cow, flanked by the two images of black and white cows was an unexpected, but fitting touch. The eartag is indeed the primary subject within this photo (disregarding the lack of focus). Maybe that wasn't one of my better decisions.
You just gotta love cows. So patient and curious, great subjects!

The crop, subject, (evening?)light and composition are great, so is the color, but I'm missing a focal point. That could've been the 'earring' but since that's not in focus... I find it more a distraction than an attraction, which it should be. This would work if the DOF was not so shallow, the textures of the skin would be a real bonus as well... So MHO: a good start, but next time tell the cow not to move or use a faster shutterspeed/smaller aperture... then I'll try to fit it on my wall somehow... ;-D

Very nice. I love the tight crop. The composition is great. I think it works with or without the tip of the ear. The lighting is great too.
As for the Critiquer's Corner, I have to agree that the tag seems to dominate the picture some, almost as though it might be the focal point of the photo. If it were the focal point then I think I might like to see it more in focus.
A great shot either way. I'm liking the series and I can't wait to see what's next.

A couple of things come to mind right off. First . . . the tag focus being soft is a distraction. I think that's partly why several people have commented on it being to much tag and not enough cow...
(IMO) The cow image does come through distinctly cowish (It's a technical term). I have no problem with the composition as is, but I think a deeper DOF that focuses the tag so it is sharper without losing the focus on the cow would improve the overall image. This is especially obvious if you look at the Manu cow image (with Ear tag) that is almost exactly what you have done here (His link is above). In that case, the tag is not nearly as distracting.
I also think the previous cow picture was a lot more fun . . . all in all . . . and a better image. If, however, this is a part of an overall composition for which other parts are yet to be seen and / or evaluated, then I will clearly need to reserve a more critical judgement until I have more information at my disposal.

Good to see something from you after a long period of silence, but I understand, it eates time to look and comment, and we all have our jobs too. I like this shot Hugo, maybe the whole head is better, and the whole cow still more, but what I think is, that when you look at it, you recognize it as a cow Immediately, while you see only a small part of it. That my friend is the eye off the master I suppose. Hope you stay yourself after these words...Lol.

Hugo, I'm with Phillip on this one. The previous cow photo has a stronger impact and even a humorous point of view. In this image, I like the sqaure format (the cropped ear does not bother me). I'm bothered a bit by the softness in the ear. Mostly though, I'm distracted by that tag. My first impression is that it was a photo of a tag that happened to have a cow attached.
I understand that it is part of all Dutch cows; US cows are also tagged in many situations. However, the tag is so dominant that it overpowers other elements that could be more significant. For me, those elements might have been the cow's eye and the curves and tonal gradations in the hide.
I'm actually charmed by this cow series. I have a few cow pics in my collection. Their benign, cud-chewing, lumbering, moseying manner makes me happy!

I have to be honest and say that I much prefer your previous cow photo. I would love a print of that one in my family room! I'm just not 100% sure about this one - it just does not 'push my button'. :)

Hi Avi, sorry for not replying to your comment on the previous photo - yet. All Dutch cows are tagged like this. The tag has a chip in it, and this way the cow, where he / she came from, etc. is identified. It's basically for safety, in case the animal has a desease, but also to measure "production" and give her the right diet to optimise that production. I think. Thanks for your comment,

Hugo, you bovine shooting animal! Another great image here! Is this a second 2x2 for the same client or did they decide against the original attempt? Lovely abstract composition. It makes me peaceful...must be because these creatures CAN be so docile.

Hi Arda, I considered that option, but that wouldn't fit in the square. I decided to stick with the square format in favour of including the ear, as it's part of a series, which needed to be printed at a 2m x 2m canvas... Per attached the full frame photo, which includes the ear, too.
