Your use of perspective with those kind of lens is just great and very effective. The composition is so well balanced and the tones of this b&w are in harmony with the cityscape. I would to see just more contrast on the right side of the image: I love how you have exposed the left side ... probabily just too much stop difference bewteen the two side..(not your fault!).

terrific shot Hugo helped no doubt by that wonderful lens, but give that lens to another person and he would just not achieve what you have shown us.a good lens in the masters hand is a wonderful thing.I love the sharpnes, the viewpoint the lines shapes and curves.

Gorgeous! The sharpness and the detail is exquisite Hugo. The BW is perfect and all that negative space in the sky is just right to balance out the meat -- and oh what a big steak this one is! Antonia

A dazzling image... I really like the effect of the fisheye here (better than in your previous image). So no need to 'defish', as far as I am concerned... The distortion caused by the lens it goes so well with the natural curves of the guy-ropes here.

I don't know, Carsten. It's a question of personal preference, I guess. I like the feeling of "being inside" the picture brought by the fish-eye in this particular case.

I like the effect the fisheye gave the bridge. It reminds me of those rickety rope bridges that curve and sway. So it looks the primative meeting the modern city. love the b&W tones!

Hi Randy, as it was mid February and freezing when I took this shot, I never actually contemplated it being filled with activity.... It being the first time I visited NY, I only know it as quiet as this. Have to agree on the fisheye, Carsten Ranke's rework is much better....
Thanks,
Hugo

Hi Thilo, thanks for your analysis. I think it's the fish-eye effect that causes the uneasy feeling. Carsten Ranke "de-fisheyed" it, and I think that does the trick here. I see what you mean, though. When cropping this, I focused on the horizontal composition, trying to preserve the Manhattan skyline, not focussing on the vertical comp.
Cheers,
hugo

Hi Peta, thanks for your comment. It was mid february when I shot this, and quite cold, there were few people on the bridge, and I took this shot when it was completely empty. As it was my first trip to NY, I only know it as empty as this, never even considered it full of people...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Angelo, I quite agree, two fluffy clouds would've been perfect in this situation. Still, I also think de-fisheying the image (see Carsten Ranke's would've had a bigger impact. As usual, much appreciated!

Gotta love me some of that fish-eye action! Incredible depth and perspective, Hugo!
Very nice contrast.
In a way, it's a shame there weren't one or two fluffy clouds there... but ya can't help that.
The division of the shot into two triangles (to the right of the bridge and to the left of the bridge) seems instinctive and natural and is very effective.

great shot Hugo, Although my sense is that you have more sky then needed and that if croped just slightly it would enhanse the impact and distract the eye from so much space above. In fact the skyline is almost centered. This is just a feeling on my part...certainly not an absolute.

Hi Hugo,
it seems you went for the same places we went =)
impressive shot again, but this time, my deep personal feeeling is that the fish eye is not as "useful" as in the other pictures. maybe it's that the sky is so dominant here... I mean: the sky is great with the fine gradient, but it's kind of overdominant here...
anyway, great shot.
best wishes, Thilo

Hi Hugo, This is really a good perspective and positioning of walkway at bottom to lead your eyes into the photo. It does seem disconcerting without people, cars or even aircraft present but I think that adds a certain impact that rivets your attention. Adding to discussion of the fisheye in this particular shot, I don't think it enhances this picture. The effects being most noticable in the lower third of image, to me simply create an odd distortion. Still a fine shot and nice addition to the series.

Not as embracing the perspective as in other fisheye shots of yours, maybe one gets accustomed slowly ;-) I love the super wide FOV, and have my 10-22 zoom mounted by default, too. Maybe I would prefer a defished version here

Hi Roger, I didn't do anything to this shot, except for cropping it square and desaturating it. Maybe I should've defished it, as I do see your point; Not really necessary here, a rectilinear would've probably created a better image. I think the unsettling curvature in the skyscrapers is mainly because the horizon runs almost through the vertical centerline, and the square crop was taken off center, disrupting the uniform level of distortion.
I've grown fond of the 10.5 mm lens, and my 12-24 f/4 aspherical, keeping them on my bodies practically by default. I need to remind myself on occasion not to over do it, though...:)
I appreciate your critique, very useful, Thanks!
Cheers,
Hugo

Another masterful example of an ultrawide-angle shot. Have you slightly "defished" it, I wonder? I think I would have, and would have taken it even a little further. The curvature in the skyscrapers is a little unsettling. Of course it shouts "Fisheye!" but that can soon become tiresome. It's the unique vantage point and perspective that makes this shot (plus the beautiful clarity, of course). A rectilinear 15mm would have been just as effective...

That's a nice thing about fisheyes . . . you get the horizon close to the middle of the frame and and the wildness disappears and it's just a super wide angle shot. Those Gothic arches look familiar. Is that the Brooklyn Bridge or another? You can tell I haven't spent much time in NYNY. Is that a pedestrian bridge in the foreground? You might profitably cropp a little from the top. Crisp with a full gamut of tones.

HI Hugo,
WHat an awesome bridge, it's wonderful. And it's empty? That in and of itself is amazing. Although there might be someone way down in the distance.
This picture has so much to look at, love it.
Great perspective here, and most appealing it is. Wonderful leading lines, good range of tones.
Very nice work, Have a GR8 day/evening,

I'm wondering if it is not a bit cluttered? With the lines that lead off from the bridge. In a way I find it to be interesting with the left of the image pretty much open with the walkway and then on the right is a jumble of buildings along with bridge lines and what appears to be a walkway. Even though, I can still see your style in this and would not need a name to know who took it. There is still some great qualities with the b&w tones and little details. My fav. part of the image is the line on the bridge which lets your eyes walk the path and then up the shadow on the bridge wall where it then rests on the flag.

Composition is the most critical factor in photography, the use of vertical and horizontal gives a sense of stability and emphasize height, which in turn gives an enclosed, down to earth feel, which done with efficiency. Although I like the leading bridge off set, but I feel there is a small foreground crop needed to eliminate the bending effect of the fish eye lens. Saeed
