What first hit me, Paul, was that this was very much like stepping out of an airplane and falling into a vortex. I was immediatly drawn toward the center.
Your skill in post production, considering the original you posted in your comment, has intensified the experience. You have even brought out the reflections in the ceiling of the people on the conveyor, interlaced with the neon.
Very estute of Hugo De Wolf to notice the contrast between the lighting effects and the camera settings.
In your answer I was interested in your approach to layers, a favorite tool of mine.
I have one question. Considering that the 20D has a 1.6 multiplier, is the 17-85mm USM lens the true focal length? The perspective seems to be wider than the 35mm you are suggesting in your data - more like a 17 or 18mm.
I am asking this question, because I am serously thinking of switching to the Canon system - interested particularly in the 5D for its full-frame capability.

Isn't that the coolest airport. This shows it so well. The electric blue feels awesome. captures the movement of that place. the windows open up to a wild ultra modern feel too.

Amazing colour, At first glance I thought the right side was a mirror image of the left. I really like the people mirrored in the ceiling.

nicely done i would say. it reminds me of one of the walkways at detroit airport, where you can find all kinds of glowng lights on the walls as you move by.

Fantastic capture. I love it!!!!! I'm impressed that you went out of your way like that while traveling. So often I miss out on potentially good shots because I'm so exasperated by the experience of getting to through and from the airport that I just let it go..lol. You are an inspiration. Antonia

A great shot here Paul! I love your point of view and all of the great leading lines. Lots of great stuff to look at.

Congratulations on the win and your new camera. I've been eyeing the 20D too, but haven't moved up to it yet because of cost too. Maybe I will have to enter my photos into some contests....

Ah, very perceptive of you, Hugo, to discern the bright light for such a low setting. I opened this raw image twice in CS2...once for shadows, and once again for highlights. Then I layered them into the same stack, erasing away the overexposed highlights in one adjustment layer.
Thanks for the study, and I'll re-examine the neons overhead.

Hi Paul, Good grabshot, and a fascinating feel; the industral, busy atmosphere of an (any) airport is quite tangible. There's a considerable noise, but nothing surprising at 1600 ISO. The thing that strikes me is that it looks much brighter than the camera settings reveal.
I presume you took this standing at one of the ends of the conveyors to manage to maintain the centered symmetry? Works well here, as the spectrum and the neon lighting overhead prevents it from being static.
The reflection of the overhead neon tubes create a rather intricate lineplay, but seem to have been played with a bit too much.
Nice shot, would be interesting to see what the original looks like, and give us a clue as to how much postprocessing was actually involved here...;)

Its too bad you had to use such a high ISO. This is such a cool place, and you've captured it well. But the digital noise definetely distracts from the image. It also appears that this image was taken at a low resolution. Those two things aside, this is a very nice photo. Thanks for sharing!
