Carl,
I am not really sure if John has completely lost his mind (?), as you probably know this is just a piece of sky. I've also taken lots of pieces of sky just to put in a folder I appropiately call "sky". I always look back to this folder when I don't like the sky on a particular background and would like to change it with a sky in my folder.

But hey... that's just what I do. :-) Good luck with experimentating, it's always worth it in the long run.

Roderik

Nice cat, I have a similar photo in B&W, but I think your cat looks a little meaner (in the good sense) ... good detail too ... regards.

Hi Carl, This is a neat composition. I wonder what this would look like in color? The B&W really works with the photo thou. The cat seems to be smirking every so slightly.
Nice work.

Nice shot Carl, the only thing I think I don't like is the persons hands in the background, but probably wasn't anything you could do about that. I love photos of things found in everyday life, often overlooked, great capture.

I like the picture, and understand the possable reason the picture lacks focus. Nice capture anyway.

The origional has a green tint to it from the processingg so i scaned it as a monochrome so that may have something to do with it and its a little grainy bacause i shpened it so that it wasnt soticable where i removed the stick i had this photo reprinted on Black and white paper at image lab to remove the green tint from the print and they have more contrast i will scan the ones that are printed on B&W paper later and the 1st place winner

Thanks,
Carl

And here's a second crop. It eliminates more of the sky.

I like your photo very much, Carl - it's an interesting old barn, and the red against the trees is quite striking. Speaking for myself, though, I sometimes get more in a picture than I thought I saw - like you did with the road - because I put all my attention on the subject. I'm getting better at eliminating the "extra stuff", and I'm confident you will too.

Sorry, Carl, I shouldn't have put you through that; I should have shown you what I meant, instead of assuming you had a graphics program handy. My bad.

I'm attaching a crop. There are two possibilities: to get rid of the sky on the right, or not. I sort of like leaving it in, simply because it shows more depth, and the fence.

Sue makes an excellent suggestion about trying out some of the software demos. PhotoShop may be over your budget initially, but there are other fine programs out there you can use in the meantime.

It's not a perfect solution, but you could experiment with Microsoft Paint in your computer at home, rather than go all the way to the store to find out if it works. MSPaint is a very poor substitute, I know, but it could save you some time. MSPhotoEditor would be basic but better than Paint or nothing.

It is possible, also, to download a trial version of PhotoShop7. I believe it's free. Check out the Adobe website.

It's a pretty good shot, but the road in the foregroud doesn't do much for me. Is there a way to move closer to the barn and use the wide angle to reshoot? Or, as an alternate suggestion, you could crop (most of) the road out.
