About I'm dedicating this to my sister and her husband (it's taken in their BEAUTIFUL yard).
Thank you for your generosity...you guys are the BEST!!!
I applied a filter to this...I like the impressionist feel it gave to it.

Dear Kathy,

There is no need whatsoever to adopt a 'Thick Skin' if you truly appreciate a 'Honest Critique', therefore because of your response to Ina my 'Dedication' to you on my image titled 'Sarusawanoike' has been withdrawn.

Best of Regards!

Hi Kathy, I truly feel that the colors, texture, and comp are well prestented. I also admire Ina's sensitive critique. I think she nailed it and it was well articulated. This pictures lends to me memories of playing as a child in the fall and I also can remember the beauty of it and the smells (and espeically playing after school). Funny, I know. Well, Kathy I apologize I missed your debut on the front page, but by golly...CONGRATULATIONS!!! Hope you and your husband are enjoying a nice vacation together. Lord bless ya Kath and can't wait to see you guys. Take care.

Sarah

Congratulations for making front page today Kathy. Well deserved. This is a lovely image. MAkes me want to walk along the leaves and around the corner to see where it goes. I enjoy the autumn colours. I wish my backyard looked like this. Lovely dedication. Lovely image. Cheers - Ann :)

Thanks for the added critique, Ina! When I posted this shot I knew that it wasn't a masterpiece of photography, but I also knew that there was something about it that I liked, and especially since it is my sister's yard. I wanted to see if I could apply some filter that would add a bit of interest and would just add a bit of oomph. Obviously not everyone likes this kind of thing, but...like I told my sister about one of her shots...just put on a thick skin and let the chips fall where they may!
Anyway, Ina, thanks for the critique which lead to the exposure...it's all a learning curve!
Kathy

Hello Douglas,
Thank you for your very honest critique. Before I ever posted this image I dealt with the fact that many people don't like this type of thing. I don't care for it in many applications as well, but in this particular instance I thought that it worked rather well. Of course, we all have different tastes. I would be glad to upload the original, but I am on vacation right now and it is not available.
As far as the blown out right corner, do you have any suggestions as to how to deal with that problem? I am always struggling with that issue when I'm shooting in a bright sun.
Thanks again for your honesty.
Regards, Kathy

Hi Kathy, I thought I should add something to what has been said so far, so here it goes:
Personally, I'm not keen on the artistic filters in PS, because at some point, when it's overdone, we come to admire a filter, and not what the photograph represents. However, in your case, I made a point of emphasizing "the right amount" which means that you have applied a treatment that was appropriate to the image, and lent itself to it. I also noticed the burnt area, and it didn't bother me in the least, because some images have that "real" feel of being there, with the sun in your eyes, and this is actually how we see. The human eye would see this scene in exactly the same way you have presented it, filtered or not. I think it takes courage and inspiration to present a common scene, such as someone's backyard, as opposed to those things which are more obvious, such as great landmarks. For that I admire you. Photography is not always about exacting perfection, rules, and technicalities. It is a means of communication, and if you communicate to the viewer a memory, a fleeting moment, a mood, and that succeeds, you have achieved a lot, and that's what I think you did here. Sometimes a puddle moves us more than an ocean.

Dear Kathy and listen carefully ...

I have commented on the 'Photo of the Day', The 'Photographer of the Day', Editor's Choice, Staff Choice, and the 'Donor of the Day' before I come now to this piece of work:

First of all congratulations for making the front page and I presume for the first time so it is indeed a great honor for sure ...

Although I do believe you have much better images to represent you and also much better critiques and possibly more accurate than from the person also being honored here as well ...

For this image itself:

I keep trying to force myself to no avail that a 'Touch of Monet' might be playing in this piece but I am overwhelmed as would that famous artist who would never have an entire quadrant such as the upper right totally blown out which of course was not your fault but has caused a certain amount of destruction to the overall beauty which you have captured.

Furthermore, the entire lower right quadrant seems to be littered with a debris type of 'hot' paper instead of leaves over a little hill that reminds me of something such as a 'Burial Mound' which of course is not the case but is not exactly aesthetic imho.

I would really like to see what the original image looked like than ponder how much dodging and burning it would take to salvage this picture that you obviously have by applying a filter as you say which has done more harm than good.

No offense ... Best of Regards!

Hello Kathy. I really like it when someone creates. When people comment on this image and it's properties they need to understand they cannot treat this as a pure photographic content. You have used filters to present this photo the way an artist paints his or her vision on canvas. I like and it's well done.

Regards,

Tom

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Hi Kathy! Wonderful scene, with bright fall colors and a great location :) I love the winding path covered with leaves and the way the green and red trees blend. Very nice brushstroke treatment, just the right amount, to still be realistic, great job! Well seen and well done! This is a really nice gift! Ina

Great colours Kathy - a bit burnt out in the lighter areas, not sure if that was due to the filter you applied. A pleasing image nonetheless. Kind regards.
