I LOVE NEW YORK, as the saying goes...Walking in NYC, the city has an enormous sense of self and personality, yet all thru the USA I find this underlying theme of manufactured FUN AND EXCITEMENT. Originally shot in colour...changed to B and W in PS...Comments welcome...cheers Dan
Nice shot Dan. Excellent composition and very effective crop/framing. Showing the globe (Unisphere I think it was called?) in the lower left with the negative white space to the right is a grabbing look. The B&W makes that aspect possible, of course, and also creates a nice contrast between the fonrt and back of the globe. The stark aspects of the exposure and contrast and the obvious emptiness of the globe itself make an interesting statement., Especially in light of your comments above.
Funny that it evokes that reaction, and it's a sign of our times and mindset in the current world I think. When originally constructed as part of the 1964 World's Fair (I was just a kid then, but this object was quit an icon and made a huge impression in those times) it was intended as a symbol of the possibility of world unity, I think. That's how I remember it anyway. And that was a more idealistic (naive?) time, I think.
But how did you like the photo Ron? haha I was just explaining that I DO LOVE NYC a great deal and would have no trouble living there...but the image portays a feeling of empty glam and glitz...not unlike what is given importance in the USA on a regular basis, Mickey Mouse and Disney are manufactured fun...celebrity has replaced the real people and heros we should look up to. Gossip is empty but the most popular magazines are trashy ones...there is a direct paralel to the world being perceived as empty and giving nothing back to itself in those circumstances. If a photo evokes an opinion or emotion then it has done it's job. That is my feeling based in this photo. TADA () Dan
