André, here is another picture that may help explain it a bit... there are 3 narwhals visible plus the ice in the foreground and Devon Island in the distance. The body of water is the fabled "northwest passage" of Lancaster Sound.

Hi Andre, I am not sure what you are asking, but my comment about the whale swimming by the "floe edge" means that in the springtime when the ice is breaking up, there is patches of open water next to the solid or pack ice. (I am standing of the edge of the ice which is probably still 1? to 2 metres thick in mid June or so.) Some areas open up much sooner than others and attract large amounts of wildlife like whales, walrus, polar bears and countless seabirds etc. A great spot to just absorb nature.
