Thanks - Guido. I value your opinion and know you achieve the highest sharpness I have seen, and you making a comment like this makes me look at my own photographs in a new way (I wonder what I have been missing all this time).

I never use autofocus these days (its just not good enough for me) and always use manual focus to get the absolute best focus possible - maybe my eye is not always perfect enough, and maybe the camera focus screen is not perfect either. I need to do some more testing with it on an oblique surface to see.

WRT my expensive Canon lens, its only expensive because its got ring autofocus, its qute sharp WRT the similar priced Sigmas and Tamrons, it a Canon brand, made in Japan (I think), and Canon wants to make lots of money on it. It's a very sharp lens, but its not necessarily sharper than these Russian (or Canon 50mm f/1.8 - which I have a copy of but havent used enough) lenses (which seem to have excellent glass - as good or better than Canon, but possibly not much automatic features built in etc). I also never see those lenses in our area, so I can't experiment like you do, and don't have the resources to add different mounts to them etc.

I try to get the best shots possible in camera, and use camera Raw to import my photos - then I do a bit of sharpening to compensate for the cameras anti-aliasing, any minor manual focus errors etc.

Thanks for reply Bryan
suppose you flashed this one ?looking at the black background!
Ok ,agree with you -I am very critical about focus.
First ,Canon JPG or Canon raw software does give me bad results to start off.Thats why I am using Capture One LE.
I am not saying its a bad picture, but your not cheap famous Canon lens should give you better results ,I think.
I had the case with canon 50mm 1.8 shooting textile with flash and after focus,I had to come a few mm closer with the camera to see a sharp textile patern on 100pcent crop.
Strange, but have read somewhere, focus on digital sensor is much more critical than on film.

Just my honest opinion my friend.
Keep shooting
I follow up your usefilm portfolio with great interest for your photographic work in my beloved country South Africa.
Cheers
Guido.

Dont know if I agree with you Guido - unless you are talking about the background flowers etc. Your very sharp Russian lenses may also be making you overcritical with sharpness (and may make everything else look like toys) - I don't know. I know some monitors don't show sharpness so well, but on my LCD - its fine (I think you may need to look at a 100% crop to make a comment on it like that - you seem to be the expert in this regard, so let me know - see attachment). At least the important parts are as sharp as I could get them (to my limited ability).

I generally try to limit the DOF to the important parts - it gives better spacial definition. Obviously, anyone can shoot everything with F/32 or with a small DigiCam at tiny apperture, but it tends to look rather flat (and looses some sharpness) then, also BG objects start being a distraction - havent you noticed...

Comment on the 100% crop I have pasted.

could be very nice,Bryan
but it doesnt seem very sharp to me?
Wonder if this lens hasn't got a too narrow dof?
Or maybe shoot from a bit further distance and go f16.
