Thanks for that Paul - it was safety in numbers that night. We had Ade with his "lethal" tripod and if that failed there were a couple of other chaps (Alastair and Den) who would have thrown Nikon D70's at the ruffians ;-)
Seriously though, we never felt threatened once but were asked to take photos of several groups of young ladies (using their cameras).

Yes, indeed. I have stood on these bridges so many times, it's amazing I haven't fallen off yet.
Every rare time I have returned to the area, the urge to do more bog-standard bridge and bridge-dweller photographs overcomes me. As do memories of trekking back on Brazilian tarmac from Benwell via Gateshead with a silly coat and tripod at 5am watching the lorries bring supplies and medicines to... (sorry, wrong meeting).
The Quayside can be particularly rough on Sundays, but if you claim to be Sirkka-Lisa Konttinen and say that you've just come down from the Scotswood Road, practically everyone warms to you and immediately stops trying to break your camera.
The Quayside is the, er, Dorset of the North East, there is no doubt about that.
Fantastic nightscape Paul, the quayside really is an amazing place and I/we are definitely coming back up again sometime (once I have saved up a bit more lol).
