Thanks for your comment and question Ellen. The shutter speed was set by the camera. I was using my "Program Mode" Use the program AE mode to have the camera automatically set the shutter speed and aperture value to match the brightness of the scene.
I manually set the ISO to 100 to keep the noise down and reduced my exposure bias to reduce the glare of the bright sun.
I don't always shoot the full Auto mode. I wanted to take mor Photos, but was running late...
