Next in a series about Cincinnati Graffiti Art...here's a little background:
Living canvas Graffiti, hip-hop influenced art foundation of Scribble Jam
It's impossible to deny the impact of the activities Scribble Jam celebrates, according to Contemporary Arts Center associate curator Matt Distel. "Scribble Jam, the event and the magazine, has been a vital part of Cincinnati's cultural underground for the past 10 years," he says. "Graffiti, hip-hop culture and street culture in general has had a profound impact on the visual arts, the music world, graphic design, film, advertising. When the organizers of Scribble came to us with a proposal to participate in this year's event, we thought it would be foolish not to." What arose from that initial proposal is a show that, Distel says, highlights "a sophisticated group of artists exploring the complex realities of contemporary life."
This is terrific. The picture has the grace and intensity of the painter. The tops of the cans in the foreground are a bit distracting--neither in nor out of the shot. But, hey, look who's talking!
