City - Hiroshima State - PEACE MEMORIAL PARK Country - Japan
About
This Statue was inspired by Sadako, a little Japanese girl, who was dying from radiation poisoning (after the Atomic bomb attack of Aug. 6th, 1945) but believed if she folded 1,000 paper cranes she would recover and live. Nobody knew the horrors of radiation fallout in those days - this was a brand new weapon that was just being tried out. Well, little Sadako only made it to 664 before she died but, in rememberance of her, children from all over Japan and other parts of the world bring millions of paper cranes and leave them at the statue in her memory. It's unbelievable how many there are - It makes you think. I just find it so interesting that the Master's of War are always hiding away in some Palace or Cave, Big House or Ranch, Underground or in the Sky (in their own plane), while it's the innocents and naive and unfortunates that always seem to be the victims of war. No PS used.
I agree with CB's comment......love your informative abouts,Mark.....thanks for sharing this very important tribute to that very sad moment in time.....to me, the shadowed parts are symbolic of the darkness that enveloped the people and the bright part is a sign of hope...regards,gayle
They were discussing this on BBC Radio 2 yesterday, how the scientists were jovially taking bets only hours before the bombing, about what would happen, and how badly the bomb was going to explode. They were so unsure of the power of the bomb that they worried it could ignite the Earths atmosphere.
I still remember as a high school student reading about the bombings...this 50th should not ne forgotten...I ahve read about the cranes but have never seen them ... one to the sky and one underground...sounds to familiar...to recent...to today...they don't seem to remember though....do they...K
